Cochlear Implant Candidacy
Rosie was brought to your center for evaluation at age 4 years. Her mother reported that Rosie's hearing loss was identified at birth through newborn hearing screening. Rosie has an older brother who also had a hearing loss identified by newborn hearing screening. As far as the family knows, there is no family history of hearing loss. Genetic testing was obtained after Rosie's birth, and both children tested positive for connexin 26.
Rosie's brother has a severe hearing loss in one ear and a profound hearing loss in the other ear. He has a cochlear implant on the profound hearing loss ear and wears a hearing aid on the severe hearing loss ear. The parents have observed that Rosie does not hear well with hearing aids, and they brought her to the center to determine whether she was a cochlear implant candidate.
